Restaurants
Here are some restaurants we have visited in our travels.


Indio, CA


1- Spotlight 29 Casino, Indio, CA. They have a buffet/café that is mediocre at best. But will do in a pinch.

2- Fantasy Springs Casino Resort and Spa, Indio, CA. They have several restaurants here and we only tried three. The buffet is one of the best we have ever visited. The food was fresh, hot and with a good variety of choices. We highly recommend it. They have a café (Pom) also that we tried and liked very much also, the third was simply named “The Bistro”, and it was also excellent. We did not try the steakhouse or the ice cream snack place but I wouldn’t hesitate to try them.

3- Augustine Casino in Coachella, CA. They have a café/buffet here that was a surprise. The buffet had a good selection of Mexican/American choices and those that we tried were delicious. Nothing fancy just good food.

4- Cactus Jacks Bar and Grill in Indio, CA. This was by far the best meal we had while in Indio. It is an old style restaurant/bar. The people were so friendly that we truly felt welcome. They cut and age their own prime cuts of beef. I had the prime rib and it was literally fork tender, Gorgie had the roast pork special of the day and it was also wonderful. We each got two meals out of this one. They also pour great drinks. This is a keeper. Returned with Debbie and Jerry in March 2010, still great.



Desert Hot Springs, CA

5- Shanghai Reds in Palm Springs, CA. We found this place when we were headed to Fisherman’s Grill they are in the same location and are the same company. This was a great place and a great meal. Gorgie had the fish taco the best she has ever had. I had the fisherman’s Mixed grill, fish, shrimp, and scallops, and it was very good. We both had the special soup which was a lobster, crab, and shrimp bisque. What a wonderful meal. Returned with Debbie and Jerry in March 2010, they were impressed we will make a second visit before we leave. Returned in Dec. 2010 just as good as the last time.

6- Zapopan Mexican, In Desert Hot Springs. This is a clean storefront Mexican restaurant, with a typical menu. The food was good and the price was right. Gorgie had the shredded beef hard tacos and I had the carnitas soft tacos, both were very good.

7- South of the Border Mexican in Desert Hot Springs, CA. This is a good sit down restaurant with good food and good margaritas. Gorgie had the fresh corn tamales and I had the Chile Colorado chimichanga. Both were very good. Sadly this place has declined. Not very clean, (would not want to see kitchen), Food was poor, we will not return.

8- Tyler’s in Palm Springs has some of the best burgers and fries ever. A small place with outside seating, cash only. Located between Palm Drive and Indian Canyon in a parking lot, we must return. Next time I’ll try the shakes too.





Tonopah, AZ

9- Tonopah Jacks Family Restaurant, in Tonopah, AZ. This is a local/truckers, greasy spoon with surprisingly good food. Gorgie had the pasta and I had a patty melt we both had the beef/ veggie soup (very good).

Tucson, AZ

10- Mama Louisa’s Italian Restaurant in Tucson, AZ. Dad and Marge took us here and it was very good Italian food. I had the veal parmesan with Joe’s pasta (a family recipe) that was very good Gorgie had the Joe’s pasta dinner (same as mine). Two very good dinners.

11- Hifalutin Rapid Fire Western Grill in Tucson, AZ. Dad and Marge took us here and it was also very good. Gorgi had the BBQ chicken salad and said it was as good as or better than her favorite at BJ’s. I had the Ribeye with a blue cheese sauce and shaved onion rings. It was prepared to a prefect medium rare as I like it and was very tasty and tender.

Benson, AZ

12- Apple Farm Restaurant in Benson, AZ is a family restaurant with home cooked style food. The food was good but the service is slow and inattentive. They have a good Veggie soup and the salads are fresh. The fried chicken was very good prices are reasonable. We did spot a mouse on our last visit.



13- Maguey’s Mexican Restaurant in Benson, AZ has some of the best Mexican food we’ve had in a while always busy Priced right, the enchilada’s were excellent.





14- The 86 Restaurant in Benson, AZ is an older place with a varied menu. Everything from home cooking to Mexican. Gorgie had soup and salad, and I had the hamburger steak with mashed potatoes very good.



15- The Chinese buffet near Safeway (can’t remember the name), was surprisingly good. They have a good assortment of fresh hot dishes.

Ehrenberg, AZ/Blythe, CA

16- Ehrenberg does not have any restaurants but Blyth is across the river. We went to Denny’s when they were giving away free breakfasts with a bunch of people, but it was still just a Denny’s and they didn’t make customers out of us.

17- La Casita Dos, is a don’t miss Mexican restaurant. Excellent food, good service, and nice atmosphere.

18- Rosita’s Mexican is also good almost as good as La Casita but not quite.

Yuma, AZ

19- La Fonda Tortilla Factory and Restaurant was one of the best Mexican places we have eaten at. It was so good that we went there twice, I had the Chimichanga with a cup of tortilla soup, and Gorgie had the chipotle fish tacos. The next time Gorgie had a bowl of the tortilla soup (that she proclaimed the best ever), and I had the tres tacos, one each of fish, shrimp, and shredded beef, they were all very good with the fish being my favorite.



20- We went to the “Steakhouse” in the Quechan Casino and I had one of the best dry aged bone-in rib eyes ever. Gorgie had a Caesar salad with a cup of corn chowder. The romaine was cut in half with dressing and an anchovy on top and the chowder was perfect (I also enjoyed the chowder).

21- Los Manjares de Pepe, we ate lunch here while they were making our solar screens. It is in an old converted house, nice. The food was very good, I had a Chimichanga and Gorgie had a tamale and a taco.



Los Algodones, B.C. Mexico

22- Pariaso Cantina this is a truly classic Cantina located in downtown Algodones. The shrimp here are very fresh and excellent. We went here twice this trip, the first time I had the sautéed shrimp rancho style, and Gorgie had the shrimp tacos. The next time I had the shrimp tacos and Gorgie had the sautéed shrimp Vera Cruz style. Both times they were very good. The real specialty of this place is the Cadillac margarita we both enjoyed those.
